SURVEY; MOST GRAIN ENGULFMENT FATALITIES ARE ON FARM Associations Step Up On Prevention, Bin Entry Posters Available The Nebraska Grain and Feed Association (NGF), the National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) and the Grain Elevator and Processing Society (GEAPS) have recently placed a great deal of emphasis on preventing grain engulfment incidents in the commercial grain elevator and feed sectors. This topic was a major focus of recent state and national Association attention. These efforts include the NGFA and GEAPS summer safety workshop in Omaha, the NGF July safety workshop and the July grain engulfment prevention and extraction demonstration in North Platte. It also will be addressed at the December NGFA Country Elevator Conference in Indianapolis, and it is a featured topic in the new DVD – “Your Safety Matters” – produced in conjunction with GEAPS last year. Information on the DVD is available on the NGFA’s website. While there has been a troubling increase in incidents this year, the vast majority of these reported incidents have occurred on-farm. Bill Fields of Purdue University reports in his just-released Purdue University and AGRO survey that 76 percent of the incidents (33) occurred on farms, while 24 percent (13) occurred in commercial grain-handling facilities. This is consistent with historical data, in which nearly 70 percent of engulfment incidents have occurred in farm bins. The NGFA is working collaboratively with several farm organizations – the National Corn Growers Association is taking the lead role – in producing a special short DVD intended for a farm audience on how to avoid engulfment incidents. Additionally, NGF will be making available 12” by 18” or 8.5 x 11" vinyl adhesive Grain Bin Entry Safety Posters which can be affixed to commercial or on farm grain bins. Originally designed and made available by the Grain and Feed Association of Illinois (GFAI) and reprinted with their permission, this poster is geared towards producers, elevators or can be applied in any environment where people work in and around grain bins. If you are interested in ordering the Grain safety posters, please contact Pat or Sara at the NGF office at 402 - 476 - 6174.
